Quality without the expense of nature

Door to Door Container Movement process has variety of aspects which impact on the environment. Our environmental approach is highly customer oriented. Periodically reviewed environmental goals guide our activities everywhere. We recognize the Baltic Sea as the main environmental aspect of the Container Movement Process. Baltic Sea is the home sea for our vessels being an environmentally sensitive sea area, resource and welfare which is an important issue for us and for our customers.

In order to continuously improve the environmental performance in the Container Movement process we focus on aspects of the major impacts and set the environmental performance goals respectively. Special focus is on active control of emissions per transported ton. High load factors form the basis for the sustainable Containerships transport. By taking care of constantly high load factors in import and export we minimize unnecessary emissions to the air and sea.

Our policy principles are:

  • Overall delivery accuracy of the Container Movement Process
  • Actual load factors of the ships
  • Fuel related targets (Quality and Environment)

We are convinced that these aspects have the highest impact on the Container Movement process environmental efficiency and the quality as experienced by our customers.

Sea transport

We control and monitor the quality of ship bunker fuel oils by setting performance targets for our fuel suppliers according to ISO 8217: 2010 Fuel standard and Marpol 73/78 Annex VI requirements regarding SOx Emission Controlled Areas (SECA) restrictions. According to Marpol Baltic Sea is defined as a special area where higher protection is provided.

Containerships fuel quality targets exist for both heavy and light fuel oils (HFO) 380 and Marine gas oil (MGO).

Maximum sulphur content for our ship bunker is 1 % in SECA area and outside SECA area 4, 5%.

To monitor fuel quality a fuel sample is taken during every bunkering by the ship. Samples are sent for analysis to a recognized laboratory as per ships fuel control program.

Port terminal performance

Excellent port terminal performance reduces total impacts of the Containerships Container Movement process. Lift per hour is the key performance indicator for terminal service quality. High efficiency minimizes ship turnaround time and thereby reduces unnecessary air emissions from the auxiliary engines and noise while at berth. We are mostly using Short Sea terminals which utilize a Compound Principle that allows efficient loading and discharging at a minimum field area. The efficient land use at terminals reduce any unnecessary cargo handling and terminal machine work and thereby emissions to the air.

Land transport

On- and pre-carriage part of our door to door transport chain is mainly by road. We have our own road transport companies in UK, Finland and in Russia. Our truck fleet and its technical condition form a base for a good environmental control in road transport. We control road transport emissions by using a low emission truck fleet and controlling empty running. Mileages in road transport and emissions are calculated and reported periodically. We recognize environmental advantages of railway transport and railway service suppliers are used whenever container movement is feasible from customers, market area or distance point of views. River barges may be used between some locations in the Central Europe.
